Educational apps for young children need to hold attention without relying on adult-style motivation like streaks or leaderboards. LetterPlay is a collection of educational mini-games for children, built around early literacy and numeracy skills through playful, game-based learning rather than worksheets, leaning on immediate visual and audio feedback plus a reward system that actually makes sense to a young audience.
What I Built
- Mini-game suite covering letters, numbers, shapes, and matching games
- Per-child progress tracking with difficulty scaling as skills improve
- Reward system — stickers and badges for completed games
- Parent dashboard for tracking a child's learning progress from outside the game
Tech Stack
- Framework: React Native
- Animation: React Native Reanimated
- Platforms: iOS, Android
Key Decisions
- Leaned on immediate visual and audio feedback plus a simple sticker/badge reward system rather than adult-style engagement mechanics like streaks or leaderboards, since those don't map to how young children stay motivated
- Added a parent dashboard as a separate surface from the child-facing game, since parents needed to check progress without the child's play experience being interrupted or complicated by adult UI
Outcome / Impact
Delivered a playful, effective early-learning tool that both kids and parents genuinely enjoyed using, backed by real progress data parents could check.
